Amur Leopard by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper

A bit further on with the leopard wildlife portrait. Again this was so many layers of colour I've ordered some new pencils online otherwise I'll never get it finished! I took the picture outside to get a quick snap in the sunshine to get a better shot and I think the colours are more true but I do think I had a slightly shaky hand as I can detect a bit of a blur! At least my leopard now has a head and is looking a bit more realistic.
I've had to recover my computer this evening, it was getting annoyingly slow and in the course of this I tried to find a blank disc for back ups, anyway to cut a long story short I found quite a few images of pets, places which you may like to see so I'll use them for my picture of the day for the next few years!!! I'd forgotten how many photos I took!
Anyway here's a little pic of my rabbits, Willy and Rag to keep you going!

Karie your work is beautiful!
On your snow leopard you talk about the outline taking so long-how DO you transfer your image from the photo to the paper? Do you just start drawing on your finish paper or make a drawing on other paper first and then somehow transfer that to the good stuff?
I will keep coming back to your site-SO MUCH to look at AND when I click on YOUR stuff it WORKS(unlike lots of sites that just freeze up the computer BUMMER!)
Thank you much,
Jane

Hi Jane, The reason I take so long with the outline is I draw it by hand. I will admit I blow images up to see more detail as my eyesight is not the best but the reason I take so long with an outline is because I draw the colours as shapes so my line drawings look like paint with numbers, unfortunately I do not have an artistic mind and am a bit mathematical with shapes and shades whereas a lot of artists know the anatomy of animals which I do not. I'm quite fussy with the outlines as this does need to be correct for me to ensure the portrait is as true to the original animal as possible. Hope that explains things a bit more!

Thanks for your answer, Karie!
How do you not get all caught up in the details? As you are drawing each "colored shape" do you concentrate on making strokes to "read" as fur (or feathers or whatever) or are you a slave to following each bend and turn in every hair in the photograph?

Beautiful start Karie-Ann, as always. I had a sneak peek at the ref photo on flicker. You are lucky to have someone let you use their photos.
