Dog Portraits, Bramble

Apologies to everyone for my lack of work and updates. I do have a valid excuse, I got married!!! Anyway, things have now calmed down and I feel slightly less stressed and am running around in a few less circles so it's back to work before Christmas brings more commissions. This is Bramble and for the first time I am using a new support. This is Dayler-Rowney pastel paper. I thought I would try someting a little different as drafting film, although I love it, it is very restrictive with blending. This on the other hand allows blending until my pencils wear out. I can add as many layers as I like and I think it will work in my favour when images are less than perfect as the portraits can have a softer look from blending instead of the individual hairs and fur details which appear when using drafting film as only a very few layers can be laid down.

You've got a beautiful shine on Bramble's coat. Look forward to seeing progress.

If you're pleased with the amount of pastel this paper will take perhaps you should try some of the sanded ones, Fisher 400 is my favourite and I don't have to fix the pastel afterwards!

Congratulations!! That is a very valid excuse :) The portrait looks wonderful on this paper - so smooth. I just completed a graphite portrait of two dogs (first one I had done in a very long time). I'd like to try some more in colored pencil, so it's great to see how you approach your work, use different surfaces, etc. I really like the look of the blending on this one.

Well done on your marriage! No wonder you've been missing from the blogging world. Lovely Bramble - there is definitely a softer look with that new paper.

thanks all, it's good to be back. It did get a bit hectic and I'm so glad I managed to leave portraits until now otherwise I'd have gone mad! Back to it now though to catch back up in time for Christmas.
