Snow Leopards by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper
Well here it is, at long last I've got there!! I broke fingers and thumbs not to mention pencils to get this far (that's what it feels like anyway).
Back to work on Patton tomorrow, luckily he has progressed well and it won't be any effort to get back to working on a portrait of such a lovely dog. I've got a few commissions in the pipeline now, so much for the credit crunch, I'm doing as well as I was for Christmas, I really thought I'd be twiddling my thumbs and chewing the end of my pencils (I'll leave that to Willow the dog instead - she's eaten half of them now, bad bad girl) but things are still ticking over very nicely.
After working on this piece of wildlife art I'm hoping for some lovely entries into my wildlife competition, see details here
If you like my work please take the time to leave me a comment or become a follower (see bottom of page). If you would like to win a pet portrait of your dog, cat, horse or any other pet please see my new competition. It costs nothing to enter, all you require is internet access.

Snow Leopards by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper
I've managed to finish the snow leopards' bodies, I'm sure there will be some tweaking, reworking and changing at some point, now it's just the background!!! I've already drawn it out, not sure if you can see it here but it will appear before long.
As for Willow, she worked her first full day at the Forestry Commission, here she is taking instructions from Cass on how to save energy, luckily we were working in a very good area, no brambles underfoot and it was dry but very cold so Willow wore her coat for most of the day as did Cass, here they are taking a quick nap between rows, look at the ground, this how it should be everywhere, unfortunately this is uncommon and most of the time we fight through brambles and fern up to head height!

Snow Leopards by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper
Well now I've got a one legged snow leopard! I've spotted a glaring mistake that I will need to go back to rectify, I looked and looked but something just didn't seem right and now I can see I made the bib on the second leopard way too low so I will have to try to change that, luckily as the colours are very muted I'm sure I can sort it out.
And here is the Willow pic of the day, she had a close encounter with Pickle the guinea pig, but all she was interested in was chewing my solar lights, I have about 20 all around the pens and shed which glow at night, so far I think Willow has dug up 6 so I chase around after her putting them all back in place, typical puppy wanting to chew everything, luckily she hasn't started on the furniture yet!
I suddenly felt a pang of guilt at not photographing my other pets, I spend all my time chasing around after Willow taking as many pics as I can before she grows too big (she grows on a daily basis) and Treacle quite politely decided to pose for me (she did think food was on offer)
It was such a nice sunny day yesterday, the furry pets stayed out all day until the light went so they enjoyed themselves no end, instead of just an hour when I get home from work or not at all when it rains.
And these are the muscovy ducklings, they are now as big as Mum and Dad, these are just a few of them, we seem to be good at hatching these!
I'm not sure if I've ever introduced the guinea fowl, we have four led by Bob, Bob is at least 7 years old, they are just mad and spend all day chasing each other around. They really are good at guarding the house though, they make an enormous racket if something comes into the garden they don't recognise, a strange dog, a fox, buzzard and people all get a chorus of noise so we know when something is awry.

Snow Leopards by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper
And again, a bit more of an update, at least the second snow leopard is starting to take shape now, I've been at this for ages now, my day job does hinder me plus I have all the usual things at home to do when I get home from work plus all of the animals to look after, there never seem to be enough hours in the day. I've just cleaned out birds, guinea pigs, and I still have fish tanks plus the rabbit shed to clean out as well, why can't a day be twice as long! Thankfully I find doing a picure relaxing so it isn't a chore for me and I can happily sit down in the evening to work on some art.
As for the update on Willow, she is currently fast asleep by my feet, she has been to work all day wearing her doggie coat as it was wet and cold and she coped admirably well, at the moment she is just interested in following me so she can stay off a lead, luckily the team saved all the clearer ground for us to train her on, she did get a bit tangled in the bracken, her legs aren't tall enough yet to step over so she has to bound over everything and sometimes she gets a bit stuck! I tried to encourage her to barge through as I cannot always go back for her but I did have to rescue her once when her coat caught on a bramble. I'm hoping she will be quiet this evening, she seems to have rechargable batteries, after an hour's sleep she takes off again but I think her hard day's work will send her to sleep all evening!

Just a little update, starting the body of the second leopard now, bit time consuming as there are lots of layers even though the colours are very light.
No Willow pics today, we got home from work too late and light has gone, I'll get some tomorrow

Snow Leopards by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper
Well this is the next stage of the snow leopards, I did get settled into it yesterday evening and managed to get quite a bit done, this was as two films were on television plus the news so you can tell how long it takes to just cover a small amount of paper plus then of course I still will go back over this area many many times until I am happy with the colours.
And of course the now popular Willow pictures of the day... above you can see she is now fully intergrated with the chickens, this is Buffy our buff orpington cockral who is still in recovery after a very very close encounter with the fox, I reckon he played dead as the fox just left him on his back without a scratch! Obviously the little episode has left him traumatised but Willow is helping him to readjust to 'life after the fox'
And here she is trying to catch a butterfly, well almost, I have a four foot cactus with some garden ornaments in and she spent half an hour trying to catch it. She has also taken to visiting my rabbit shed with me now where she promptly lies down and falls asleep making it a bit short of space, imagine how cramped it will be when she grows up!

Snow Leopards by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper
Although this seems a small step onwards from the previous update a lot of work has actually been done. I have added more definition to the face area of the left leopard, I darkened the cheeks more and added more fur detail, I also worked further down the chest area and added shading to the whole area to develop a bit more depth, I think has made the portrait so far look much more realistic and no doubt I will revisit some areas over and over again until I am satisfied enough has been done.
Plus a few Willow pictures, today she met all our birds en masse, we were lucky to be given a large bag of bread to feed them with so they all gathered in a crowd on the lawn. Willow has obviously taken training from Zac and Gypsy and stolen her own fair share of bread rather than take any notice of the birds (good news actually)
Then, the sleeping beauty fetched her outdoor coat and settled down for a nap by the vacuum cleaner. She likes the vacuum and tries to catch it!

As for Willow, she has been inoculated and has made good friends with Gypsy and Zac already. Luckily she doesn't cry for her Mum which is very surprising and she is quite happy to sleep with Gypsy and Zac so it's all been ok so far!!!

Willow the black german shepherd has arrived!
Willow has already met some chickens, the most vital part of her training, there can be no mistakes if she takes a fancy to one as they are pets as well, thankfully she wasn't interested at all so hopefully that's not going to be a problem!

Latest pet portrait and pet update
Not much art has been going on I'm afraid, we've had bad frosts and as usual all of the animals outside suffered from frozen water meaning every day we have to go to each pen and unfreeze their water which is quite a long time consuming task. Also my rabbits and guinea pigs have had to be cleaned out, even in cold weather they still get dirty which is a bit unfair! I've also been getting supplies in for my new puppy who arrives tomorrow, I think I now have everything, bowls, lead, collar, id tag, whistle, bed, cage, extending lead, puppy food, treats, toys and a hot water bottle!!! I've booked her into out local vet for her inoculations and puppy check on Monday so it's all go. I'm sure I'll be taking lots of pics tomorrow to post of Willow's homecoming and I now have a camcorder or whatever they are called these days so I shall be able to post videos soon (wait until tractor racing starts again, see if I crash into a chicken pen this year!). Aside from all the animal goings on I have also started a wildlife portrait, so far I think I've done an eye so it's been very slow going but I am going to enter it into a competition if I can manage to fit it in! No rest for the wicked they say and it could well be true, in the meantime... a few guinea pig pics to keep you going until my next post.
It's too cold, Sooty is hiding in his bedding...
Sweep is looking for his carrot
And Pickle is about to jump ship in search of hay

Dog portrait from photo, Patton
Been outside as today was a bit sunnier than the recent days of freezing fog so it was clean out in the shed and all my little animals came out to play. Their pens were in sunshine for a few hours so they made the most of it racing around before it was time to put them all back into their heated shed!!!
And back to my current portrait, this is where I have got to with Patton, I have started to add the rocks and water now and it is starting to look a bit more real, this is taking almost as many hours as a coloured portrait with all those layers but the effect looks better than using different grades I think, it is the first time I have worked a portrait using just one pencil. It is an A3 sized portrait.
Also aside from everything else, I've managed to muck up my slideshow on my website, if you do visit and it's not working properly please be patient, hopefully it will correct itself after a couple of hours!!!
