Springer Spaniel portrait from photo, Charlie

I'm back on the case with competition winner Charlie, I've now completed his body and have started on the background. I need to add a little more detail to his rope toy for more definition but I hope to be posting this to his lucky owner by the end of the week.

I have now added more background to this portrait and had wanted to fade the colour out to nothing at the edges, this just does not look right to my eyes so I will be completely filling in the background right up to the edge of the mount. I'm sure this portrait will be completed over the weekend so I'll update with the final shot very soon.

And here it is, I've completed the background with a pale green which will meet the edges of the mount. All that remains now is to cut it to size, mount and post it to Keren, Charlie's owner.

Dog Show at Park Farm

My stall at the dog show, it was rotten weather in the morning and I was very surprised by how many people still turned up to show their dogs, damp and cold weather did not stop these owners. I generated some interest and had enquiries so fingers crossed they will lead to commissions. The marquee took a bit of a battering by the wind, I thought my portraits would take off or fall over but luckily it all held fast. Some of the wonderful contestants, there were so many breeds I managed to get quite a few pics for future reference.
This was the dog that looked most like it's owner section, with their matching scarves, caps and glasses, the border terrier above took first place.
A few more entrants
And this little doggie was wrapped up in a knitted jumper to stave off the cold!!!

Springer Spaniel Portrait from Photo, Mickey

At long last I am able to upload some images to my computer, it has taken a lot of patience on my part to sort this out, not being trained in computers I have to learn by trial and error, luckily this time things paid off.

This is my second portrait of Mickey in this pose due to my damaging the original, I began by putting down layers in a brown shade to give myself an idea of where everything should be (see above), I also had began work on Mickey's head at this point, so far I had only used about three colours on his head but more are added as the stages progress.

Due the ease of use pencils provide I can work virtually anywhere on the portrait due to no drying times being required so when I get bored with one area I simply move to a new one. Above I began to add the grass, I wanted to put in blades of grass against Mickey's leg to make it look more realistic as it would be impossible to add green over the brown fur at later stages.
I then began working down Mickey's back, as I have said before Mickey is very shiny so I had to ensure I left his highlights very pale in comparison with his main colouring.

Here again I added some more grass, working around Mickey's legs and body, I also added several layers of a darker brown in some areas, then I returned to the highlighted areas to burnish to give Mickey's coat it's real glossiness.

I've now completed Mickey's tail and back leg and added grass all around to give a more 3d effect. I will go back to add clumps of grass and sign the portrait and possibly add a little more grass, I will need to walk away from the portrait for a while before I decide.

After a second look at Mickey's picture and after speaking to his owners I decided to add more grass, it has turned out to have provided more contrast against Mickey's white tummy and also makes the ground look flatter. Plus if you look closely at all of the images above you can see I have taken Mickey's final image at a different time of day as the colours a little blander, what a difference it makes.

I have received the following comments from Mickey owners, they were very pleased with the portrait....

"Hi Karie

Just to confirm the portrait was delivered by 09:00am this morning, well what can we say "Its brilliant " its like Mickey is here with us , the only question I do have is that the portrait is not signed by you, if any you deserve the credit for such a fantastic piece of art.

By having your signature on the portrait will only encourage friends and family to follow suit when they wish to have a portrait of their pet done, you are a very talented artist who will thrive.

Once again we are very pleased with your work.

All the best

Terry & Lorraine"

Mickey's portrait is in fact signed in amongst the grass, but it so very motivating and reassuring when a customer is more than happy with a portrait. Thanks Terry and Lorraine for your kind words.

Hooray

Good news today, I've managed to sort out the problems with my computer, it seems my external hard-drive was not being recognised by the PC and was preventing me using it properly. I'm sure now I shall be able to post some updates as my camera should be recognised. Also I'm off to do a dog show on Sunday at St Braivels, a bit of a last minute thing so I have to organise that, got a few Christmas commissions rolling in now plus my website is now page rank 3, I'm not sure how long it has been page rank 3 as I've only just noticed, and to top it all.....it's Friday!!!!

Website gone wrong!!!

Well I'm not very happy, my website has decided to disable me, I am not allowed to publish my own site now!!! I have contacted my host but they cannot find out what has gone wrong, my home page is all stripey with all the header links missing so anyone looking will not be able to get any further than the home page. Not very helpful at all. The internet is a great vehicle when it works well, mine always seems to be breaking down though!!!

Injured Chicken Update

My little buzzard attacked chicken is on the mend, she stumbled about a bit for two days, she did look a bit worse for wear and I thought she may not survive, luckily today she seems much better and is sat upright by a broody hen and walks about (although a bit wobbly) so she has a hen to sit by and pass the day with plus she is happily ensconced in a wooden summer house with big windows and a bed of straw. What more could she ask for! Also I've been working on my tiger portrait today, I have still got a long way to go and I think I should put it to one side soon to continue with my commissions. Plus it's work again tomorrow, we are now in Ketford which is just across the forest from Red Marley, it seems to be such a long time since we worked in a local area, but I'm not complaining, being out and about in the wood is so much better than being sat in an office any day.

Horse Portrait from Photo

Well I've had some feedback about Ollie's portrait and it is good news, it seems Ollie's owner was very pleased with her surprise birthday gift so that's a great relief!!! I'm currently hoping to have a page with my pet portraits displayed on a popular dog website so hopefully it will prove popular for both myself and the dog website, fingers crossed, it's still in the very early stages so far but it sounds quite promising plus I'm trying to figure out how I want my background to look on the tiger portrait for the pet portrait competition but I cannot seem to get it quite right, I know what I want but cannot get it down on paper, plus I have a few commissions building up to get on with now so I'm a bit of a busy bee at the moment, my day job does get in the way a bit you know!!! Talking of the day job I passed my assessment for brushcutting, clearing saws and strimming, I sound professional now (it's not true at all) so I should be able to do a good job - who are they kidding!!! And most importantly of all, I saved one of my warren chickens from certain death yesterday, I heard a commotion in the garden so ran outside to find a buzzard about 3 foot from the back door and I am not exaggerating in anyway, sat on a chicken trying to rips it's wings apart, I grabbed the chicken just as the buzzard took off, I would not believe they were so big without seeing one with it's wings out, and how cheeky was it!!! My chicken had a fuss and is now in chicken hospital until her wing gets better, although I'm not sure if she'll ever flap her right wing properly again. Oh what fun country life is!!!

Horse pet portrait from Photo

A bit of a rush commission, meet Ollie, a lovely looking horse with unusual colouring which proved a bit of a challenge. Due to it being a surprise I was unable to post any work in progress until Ollie's owner had received the portrait.

I began by drawing in the basic outline of Ollie, as this is only my second horse commission I am still a little unsure of a horse's anatomy so wanted to make sure all the muscles etc were in the correct place. At this point I used four different colours to start to get the correct colouring and depth, I had not put in high and low lights so there were to be several more layers added later.
Below you can see I moved across to Ollie's cheek, I wanted to make sure I was getting the shape of his head correct. I added a few more layers here to the original four colours, I added a darker brown, some brown black to create more shadows plus I burnished a little to start to show up the sheen on his fur. Still a long way to go at this point though.
Below I started to add a little of the black background, this made a major difference to the look of the portrait as it made Ollie's colours stand out much more, it created a really good contrast. I also worked on Ollie's ears which were very pricked and apparently a good indicator of his personality. A very alert horse by all accounts.

Unfortunately as this was such a rush job I had to take the final pictures at night time under lights, as you can see it makes a massive difference to the colours and shine of the portrait. I am reluctant to alter the colours with a photo shop type programme though as I'm not really sure how to do it for one but you can see the true colours of the portrait from the updates above. Ollie's portrait was collected very early in the morning so due to Autumn beginning to creep around the corner the light was not suitable in the morning to take a better shot anyway.

Anyway Ollie has now gone off to his owner for her birthday, back to the drawing board.

Behind the scenes

Well, it seems ages since I made a new post but I have been busy, I've been working on my tiger portrait for the pet portrait forum competition, all top secret so as not to give anything away yet but I have taken shots as it's been progressing and so far I'm pleased with how far I've moved on. Also I've been working on my second horse portrait which is a surprise present so I will post it after it has been received. And... I've started to build a new website, since starting the tiger portrait I've decided I would like to produce more wildlife portraits so I'm in the process of building a site solely to showcase wildlife and nature art, I've decided to seperate it from the pets and people simply for site optimization. Back to work now, plenty to do and hopefully I'll be able to add images very soon.

Rotten Weather!!!

Not much to update pencil portrait wise, I've given in to temptation and started work on an entry into the pet portrait forum competition so nothing can be given away at this point, it's all top secret as we all have to put our own version of the image together but I will keep work in progress images and will post as soon as the deadline has passed. The main image is of two tigers and so far all I've managed is part of one head so I think it's going to be a long uphill battle to complete it.

As for the day job, this Red Marley, today we were in a patch of pine with bramble and fern up as far as our shoulders and beyond in some places, believe it or not Dave is in this shot above waving at me as I couldn't even see where he was, got a few thorns to remove now!! You can just see Dave's hand and Andrew's slasher in the image below.

But at the bottom was the lovely ride shown below, then of course we had to walk all the way back up for lunch, nevermind.

Anyway, we all got wet when the heavens opened so it's an evening indoors drying off I'm afraid.

A few sickies have been pulled today, both Tess and Cass, the golden retrievers are off ill, at 15 they are probably due a few days off from all those years of work anyway. Hopefully they'll be back soon, I miss Cass barking at us to keep us moving, I did say she is a bit of a slave driver. And some bad news, my pet cockeral Fred died yesterday, he received the honour of a full burial in the garden. Now BB the rabbit has no friend to run about with now. I was quite gutted as he would crow when he heard my voice and I could hand feed him. Poor old Freddy.

Competition Portrait of Charlie the Springer 4

I have spent the afternoon working on Charlie, more of his forelegs have been completed and I have began to work on his toy (and what a toy it is, twisted ropes in pink and blue). He is now starting to take shape and look more real. Lots more to do though!!!

Competition Portrait of Charlie the Springer 3

A bit more of Charlie's face has been completed, the far side of his face is very dark so I need good lighting to be able to see his other eye properly.

A bit more work on Charlie, I have actually blocked in some of the white and pale grey on his legs but until further work takes place these paler colours will not show up.

Competition Portrait of Charlie the Springer 2

Work has now started on Charlie the springer spaniel, I am now going to make a concerted effort to leave my website alone SEO wise for a while as all my little fiddles and refinements have not really gained me much higher rankings (it may do over time) but I am doing this instead of portraits which should be my main focus of attention. So far I'm quite pleased with Charlie's progress but as you can see there is plenty more to get on with.

Competition Portrait of Charlie the Springer 1

Been very busy today, I framed and delivered the sprocker and child portrait featured yesterday plus I have made headway with competition winner Charlie's portrait. See all the entries here. I will update my blog with some progress images tomorrow as it's a bit late now. I've been nosing around the web as well and found some good websites about using colour pencils, a rare medium these days, so will be keeping an eye on these with interest. Plus as a member of the pet portrait forum we have been invited to enter into an art competition, using this image of tigers as reference but in the situation of our choosing, unfortunately the deadline is October so I am none too sure if I can enter just yet so it will be all pencils at the ready to try to get stuff done to give a bit of spare time.

Looks a bit testing but I guess that's exactly what it should be!!!

Portraits from Photos, Child and Sprocker 3

This portrait is now complete and will be framed as per client request with a silver frame, it will be delivered tomorrow in time for Mum's birthday. I decided to give the background a cream pastel colouring to enhance the whiteness of the dog's fur.
Back on the website now for a bit of updating, the boring bit I'm afraid.

Portraits from Photos, Child and Sprocker 2

The latest update of child and sprocker, almost finished now and will be framed for delivery very soon. I've gone back to add darker areas on the jacket now and I just need to complete the dog.

Plus I'm pleased to say all of the geese are now friends (wait until next breeding season) and travel about the garden in convoy or sleep en masse on the lawn, even Sid the gander is behaving which is a bit odd!!!

Pet Portrait from Photo, Hector the black labrador

Meet Hector, a very good looking black labrador. Hector came to visit today to have his photo taken for a future portrait. As yet his owners are unsure whether they want a head or full body portrait. They were the best type of clients to have as they brought plenty of images with them as well as Hector himself so I was also able to take a few shots of my own plus he was very well behaved and not at all camera shy so it was a pleasure to meet them all. I'm pretty sure his will be a graphite portrait but thankfully this one is a Christmas present so the deadline is way off...phew!!!

And... our 11 muscovy ducklings had a race around the garden today, they are a bit of an odd bunch as they chase each other around which I've never seen ducklings do before, when one falls over the rest pile on top in a bid to overtake, perhaps we should place bets!!! More than a few of them got stuck in an old belfast sink when they took a dip but couldn't get back out so I got a bit wet and messy launching the rescue operation.

Back to the drawing board....

Wedding Portraits from Photos

I'm elated, I've been contacted by a photographer with wedding portraits in pencil in mind!!! So far I have received an image to work from but it will have to wait at the moment as I have a few commissions to do but watch this space for further updates.
In the mean time I have got to work on Mickey's second portrait (although I still have the first to sort out yet) and have worked a large section of his head now.

I've lots of other bits and pieces to update but have not got time at the moment so will get back to update as soon as possible.

Springer Spaniel Pet Portrait

With many thanks to Greg Knight for allowing me to use his wonderful spaniel image (http://www.ruralshots.com/) , here is another spaniel portrait, unfortunatley I do not have the work in progress shots of this due to a formatting error on my memory card. Had a busy day today as we went to Evesham Vintage Show but it was so rainy we came home early and I was able to get on with some commissions and I made my new blog header... see above... and I also changed the style of my blog to compliment it plus yesterday I painted the kitchen so I felt a bit guilty about not doing any artwork at all!

Horse Portrait update

Roli's portrait is now complete, I'm really happy with the finished work. It was a bit of a slog working on the neck area, there were muscles and a sheen to deal with which was quite time consuming, however I think it was all worth the effort.

Horse Portrait Update

A few more pics of the horse portrait, things are going great guns with this one as you can see. I've completed the background with black pastel and charcoal and then fixed it with spray. All that is left to do is the neck (all I say, it's probably the same amount of work again due to the muscles, shine and tone of Roli's neck)

Also I have been busy with the sprocker and child portrait in graphite pencils, so far I have the main of the child down but I will need to revisit for more shading and blending at a later stage.

All in all a very busy evening and quite productive. Sometimes it's a shame I have to go to my day job!!! Talking of which we were marking douglas fir trees on the same steep bank as yesterday but as it was reasonably dry today I managed to remain upright, I think I need ropes to tie myself to the trees to hoist myself up and lower myself down like abseiling!!! It really makes my legs ache so I presume it must be quite good exercise, a little compensation I suppose. Luckily there is a small cafe near Hopewell Colliery, a visitor centre where tourists can visit an underground mine and see how it worked, see the pics below of the old mine workings.

Plus little Smudge was on guard at the door, isn't he lovely. His owners are on holiday and have left him with a dog sitter who takes him to work every day, apparantly he's become a bit of a celebrity and greets all the tourists and locals who visit the mine. I really wanted to kidnap him.

A bit different to my terrier. look at the mess she gets into, all she does is dig and tug at roots, luckily this is the dog sofa but nevertheless she is a bit of a dirty girl!!!

Pet Portraits from Photos Horse Portrait

A bit of a mixed bag today, I've got on well with the horse portrait from photo with the image from http://www.bigtimemedia.co.uk/

And I have to say I'm pleased with the progress so far. I am also really pleased to be able to use an image of a spaniel taken by Greg Knight of http://www.ruralshots.com/ as another example of a pencil pet portrait from a photo.

...And the bad news is... I damaged the portrait of Mickey the springer spaniel. I was within a hair's breadth of completing him aswell, isn't it always the way. I had drawn Mickey's tail incorrectly and erased it a little too harshly damaging the surface of the portrait. I have tried to rework the area to no avail but luckily Terry and Lorraine, Mickey's owners, are being very patient in allowing me to start over again. Oh dear, what a disaster, I was more than a little upset, so much so I nearly had a cigarette after giving up three years ago!!!

And finally I have started work on the sprocker and child so I will update this as soon as possible.

Back to the Forestry work, today we worked like soldiers on a steep bank (felt like a mountain) in the pouring rain and by a busy main road, who says trees are all glamour. I wore my waterproofs which are made of rubber looking like an alien from Doctor Who and fell over no less than a dozen times, I gave up counting at this point as it became a bit embarrassing!!!

I was about half way up the bank when this photo was taken, apparantly it's good exercise and it really does fell like it now, I ache all over!!!

First Horse Portrait on Website

Thanks to John Tyrell from http://www.bigtimemedia.co.uk/ for letting me use his image above for the first work in progress horse portrait I shall be doing for my website. The horse is called Roli, and a lovely looking horse he is. I'm so pleased to be able to use this image so come back to see work on his portrait as it happens.

Pencil Portraits from Photos Competition Winner

The lucky winner of my pet portrait competition is Springer Spaniel Charlie and his owner Keren, with an amazing 1447 votes. I want to say a big thank you to all of those who entered images and rallied support from their friends, relatives, forums etc for voting. It did my ranking no end of good and made my site more visible plus I've had a few enquiries for commissions so it was all worth while and as soon as I get a bit of breathing space I will be holding another competition. So here is the winner .... isn't he a lovely springer.

Charlie will soon have his own web page and visitors will be able to watch his portrait in progress.

I have also received more photos from Mickey's owners to complete his tail correctly plus to undertake another commission of him for them, in all I have about a dozen photos of Mickey which is ideal to work with for a pet portrait as I can use one main image to work from with the others for colour, eyes and fur details.
