Horse Portraits, Ace

And here it is.... this is Ace completed. In case you have missed any of the previous stages either follow the links for Ace down on the right hand side or simply view my little work in progress video below.

I have just started work on Harry the golden retriever asleep on the stairs plus I have drawn out 3 other portraits to do. There are still 2 more I can draw out plus I have a few more commissions just awaiting photos. I think I am getting towards being fully booked up now, which is amazing as it's still technically October. It's a shame I work full time as I'd love to take on more, I'll see how things progress and maybe I could fit a few more in!

And other news....

Today was a day off from work, Willow was meant to be spayed yesterday but I had a pang of guilt and have yet to make up my mind fully so she has had a reprieve for the time being. Because of this, we (Willow, Zac and myself) went wandering around the woods today. I took my camera as the autumn colours are rapidly appearing and I think the leaves will drop almost straight away, however when I tried to take photos, yet again my batteries were flat (mine as well as the camera I think) so what a shame.... we will have to go again tomorrow! Also the clocks have now changed so the evenings are very dark and gloomy, it's still not 4pm yet and I have to put all my rabbits and guinea pigs to bed because it's getting darker. They will be most upset.

Dog Paintings, Pepper St George

I've got back to Pepper St George's dog painting and have made some progress. I have mainly used a 4h pencil to lay down the basic fur and I now need to go back using a softer set of pencils, 3b, 4b, 5b and 6b to add more depth and shadows.
I've also made a little slide show for work in progress for Pepper so visitors can check back and view previous stages of the commission.

Ace is now completed aswell so I'll post him tomorrow along with the complete slideshow for him.

Meet Mooch. This is what her owner has to say...

We have had Mooch since August 2007 after finding her in our local RSPCA centre - she had already had at least two homes before us and was only 7 months old when we got her. She is a very friendly and playful dog - always up to mischief which is what we love about her.

Meet Chilli. This is what her owner has to say...

We have had Chilli since November 2008 and she came from an RSPCA branch across the country after falling in love with her picture and advert on the internet. She has a very sweet look, like butter wouldn't melt, but can be a right madam but you can't really tell a face like hers off.

Horse Portraits, Ace

Finally I'm moving at a faster rate it would seem of late. I've almost completed this horse portrait now and it's just the downhill bit to go! Ace is almost on the page fully and it's just for the client to decide on the background.
Phew!

I've also completed a little more of Pepper St George and he now has one ear to be proud of too so I'll be getting back to him plus I'm looking at the next one to start, this seems to keep things fresh as I'm always looking at something different rather than studying one pet at a time and it means I can work for longer hours without becoming overwhelmed with one particular pet, they say a change is as good as a rest and I think they may be right.

Horse Portraits, Ace

A bit more on my horse portrait of Ace. He has one ear and a bit of a fringe now plus I continued to work some more on his muzzle.

This is Willow hard at work, we have been completing a few trail inspections at work, just to make sure they are safe for the general public to walk along. This particular trail is near a very busy tourist spot known as Symonds Yat. Each year famously a pair of peregrines nests in the cracks of the sheer rock face and try to raise their young.

And finally here is a little video of our Cyril, he needed some exercise so was given a run about in the living room. It seemed Cyril was very interested in gardening and spent most of his time either eating the soil from the plant pot or chewing on the plant pot itself!

Dog Paintings, Pepper St George

This is the start of the next of my dog paintings. This is Pepper St George, aptly named as he was born on a St George's Day. Unfortunately Pepper has now passed away but looking at the photos I have received Pepper was a much loved dog who is sorely missed.

So far I have used 4H, 2B and 3B Cumberland Graphite pencils (made by Derwent) but expect to add more as I continue working on this dog painting. I have only layered a little and will be darkening areas as time goes by trying to recreate the sheen and dark of Pepper's fur.

And just a little pic of Cyril. We have decided to winter him after advice from the squirrel rescue people as it will soon be time for squirrels to rely on their stores of nuts, of which Cyril has none, plus it will be quite cold so he is moving into the rabbit shed. We think we will be able to let him out to play and just shut him up securely at night time so Cyril will be spending Christmas with us. Thankfully at this seasonal time of year all the supermarkets sell lots of nuts so he will be nice and fat for spring time!

Horse Portraits, Ace

A very odd colour backgroud on this horse portrait. The photo was taken under a daylight bulb and lightened slighty but the grey background looks slightly pinky at the top! Anyway, back to the important stuff, the horse portrait, and Ace now has a nostril, I'm sure he's quite pleased about that!

Horse Portraits, Ace

I've moved on a little with the latest of my horse portraits. Ace is now really beginning to look more 3d, I'm really pleased with the bridle as I know nothing about them whatsoever, they look very complicated and adjustable so I had to ensure I had everything was in the correct place. I'm now working around the mouth area and have yet to add lowlights on Ace's forehead but it still is beginning to look more real. I'm beginning to think I'll never use anything else but drafting film as it suits my technique very well, or is it that I've adapted my technique to suit the drafting film, either way I find it so easy to use.

And news on Cyril.....

This is Cyril taking in the big outdoors, for the sake of technicalities, I am not releasing a non-native species into the wild, I am simply returning a wild animal back to it's previous habitiat (just in case, but as you will read later, it makes little difference).

We left Cyril with his cage, bedding and chestnuts and went out for the day, however when we returned about 7 hours later there was no sign of Cyril, being the mad animal lover that I am, I called Cyril's name (like he speaks english!) and to my shock and surprise I heard a rustling in the tree above my head, he raced down the tree trunk, raced across the ground and climbed up my legs to sit on my shoulders, if someone told me this story I would say, don't be so stupid but here is the proof.....

And he would not be parted from me, he decided he had to lick my hands non-stop (not sure what that means in squirrel language) but he was unphased by Willow being sat by me, she really is very good and after I threw him into a tree and tried to go home he decided he would follow me across the road.

This is us returning to the wood to get him off the road....

And here he is after having made it back home. He is now safely back sleeping in his woolly hat ready for another attempt at teaching him to be a proper squirrel in a tree!!!

Meet Whitney.
This is what her owner has to say about her....
This is my eldest cat Whitney. She is now 26 and unfortunately showing her age and suffering form congestive heart failure. I have had her since she was 3 (ish) and she moved with me from Belfast to England in the late 90's. It would be wonderful to have a portrait of her.

Meet Belle.
This is what her owner has to say about her...
This is a photo of my new little kitten Belle! This is one of the first time she dared to leave the comforts of the house. She loves digging in the plant pots (I say digging... I think she is using them for a loo!) She started climbing a small tree as soon as she went out so I think I'm going to have a little rebel on my hands (Fire Service be warned!) She's such a cuddly wee thing especially in the morning after her milk... she curls around my neck and just can't seem to get close enough. As I live on my own having her to come home to really has made a difference in my life. I find it so relaxing even just watching her stretch out in front of the fire other hobbies include licking the fridge (not daft then!) chasing her tail and charging up the strairs. I worry about her when I'm at work and even but a hot water bottle in the shed for her in case she feels the cold... pampered or what! This photo is so cute I think she seems to have a wistful look, either that or she's thinking... 'what on earth are you doing!'

Horse Portraits, Ace

Ace's horse portrait is starting to take form now. I have worked most of the bridle but will need to work on the highlights a little more I think. I've also used the lightest of the colours as a base over the bridge of his nose. In some areas I have started to add shadows and his lovely freckles which are just so sweet. Don't forget you can click on any image to see it in more detail.

....And introducing the newest recruit at work (please note we even put carpet in the back of the truck for the dogs!) This is Summer, she is a golden retriever and she is about 4 months old and is owned by Dave. He previously owned Cassie and Tess who came to work every day until they were 15 and 16 years old so Summer will have many years of work ahead of her! Summer is a bit manic as all puppies are, luckily Willow is still only 10 months old and is quite happy to play and roll around on the ground, in the truck, in puddles and mud so they are both having a puppy playtime everyday!

And here they are hard at work earning doggy biscuits! Don't Willow's eyes look spooky, she looks like a werewolf! Willow is obviously having a rest and leaving all the hard work to Summer.

Horse Portraits, Ace

This is a birthday commission for a birthday very near Christmas. This is Ace, I had the privilege of meeting Ace at the Huntley School of Equitition to take his photographs. Ace is 15 years old and he is a stunner, mainly white and pale grey but covered in darker grey freckles all over, he really stood out amongst the horses I saw. Ace is a gentle giant, I'm not much of an expert with horses and they do make me err on the side of caution, but Ace was very placid and more interested in gobbling up as much grass as he could rather than show me any attention which definitely put me at ease. Ace posed for many photos and he is a proud looking horse so a head and shoulders portrait will do him justice.
So far I have spent about 4 hours ensuring everything is in proportion and starting work on the eye area and bridle.

Meet Barney. Click on the image for more detail.
This is what his owner has to say.....

Please find attached our pet, Barney, the Irish Setter.
He is 5 years old, and the most loving loyal & fun dog you could ever wish for!
We have had him from a puppy, but moved to France when he was one year old, and felt he needed a pal, so we got him Murphy a Breton spaniel for company. There are only 10 days between them, and they are both a bit mad, so they get on like a house on fire!
We wouldn’t do without them!

Meet Dizzy. Click on the image to see more detail.

This is what her owner has to say.....

Dizzy came to us in 2006 from a rescue centre. She had been rescued from a man that had fought her Mum in illegal dog fights, right up until Dizzy was born. She came to us at 13 weeks, this picture was taken the same day we got her. Dizzy was sadly put to sleep in December 2008 aged 2. She had a dangerous streak in her around other dogs. The vet believed to be due to a mental problem caused when her mum was faught whilst pregnant. Dizzy was the most loving, kind, clever, loyal, beautiful dog that anyone has ever met, and not a day goes by when we dont think about her.

Meet Harley. Click on the image for more detail.

This is what his owner has to say....

Harley found his way to us through a series of very unfortunate events, such as bolting into cars, brick walls, major roads. He was deemed unrideable and therfore unwanted. Ever since I laid eyes on him I have thought he was the most soulful, broken horse I have ever seen, after a year with us and remembering what its like to be loved, Harley seems to be making a lot of progress, this picture was taken a few months ago and oozes love, happiness and beauty.

Pet Portraits Commissions

As you can guess with Christmas just around the corner, commissions are coming in which means unfortunately I shall have to put Willow, Gypsy and Zac to one side. I have done a little more since the last update but maybe I can use their dog portrait as a break between commissions. We'll see! I am concentrating my efforts on postal commissions first as I believe there could be a postal strike which will cause choas, so if you would like a commission please order it as soon as possible to ensure a safe and timely delivery.
And news for the pet portrait competition, if you are interested in entering please ensure you follow the instructions, I have now received over a dozen images which are simply too small, I have asked for images of 250kb and above but many are simply too poorly detailed and less than 100kb, if I allow these images to be entered, should one of them win the resulting portrait will be unacceptable, this will reflect on my reputation so therefore I'm afraid they cannot be used. Also .... please.... take time to add a few words about your pet, I have emailed many entrants who have sent images minus this little biography but I'm afraid I shall be too busy to continue with this, if an image arrives without any additional text I will simply post the image from now on minus the text as commissions will take priority. It really isn't an essay I'm looking for, just something to persuade visitors that your pet is the most worthy of a vote. Hope that helps clear up any queries!

Meet Casper. Click on the image to see more detail

This is what his owner has to say....

His name is Casper and he's convinced he's a lap dog despite being larger than your average labrador. He's a bit unusual for a samoyed in that he's biscuit and cream and has loads of soft fluffy fur. Casper is such a people's dog and always has a smile for everyone (especially those voting for him!)

Meet Tammy. Click on the image to see more detail.

This is what her owner has to say...

Tammy is 2yrs old and a little minx, she hides her toys all over the house and just when you think they are lost she brings one out and she loves to just cuddle up to you.

Pet Portraits Competition Entry No 16

Meet Puppy, this is the second of two entries for her. Click on the image to see more detail.

This is what her owner has to say...

This is a picture of my Whippet Pup. She is now 4 years old but this photo is from when she was a few months old. I bought her as a puppy when I lived in Australia and I brought her home to the UK with me when I returned! (it cost rather a lot but she is totally worth it). She is called Pup because not long after I got her I moved to work on a stud farm. Being the happy little soul she is she met some people before I did and they would all call her Puppy! So it soon stuck. She is the light of my life! We go cycling often together. I would love a potrait of her - she is a one in a lifetime dog!

Dog Portraits, Willow, Gypsy and Zac

A bit of an update for the dog portraits, more of the leaves are now in place and Gypsy is showing up a little better, plus I have taken a few shots of some of the birds we have bred and raised this year just in case you missed them as I've not posted many for a while....

This is our temmincks tragopan we bred a couple of years ago, finally he is coming into colour and now he looks as pretty as his Dad! These are a very calm and friendly bird, when I went into the pen to take the photos, he simply walked up to my feet and looked up to me, they are not at all flighty but the females are much more wary.

Again, another cock bird we have bred, this one is a golden pheasant and he is just so talkative, he makes the most noise calling all of the other birds and he will strut up and down the fence line if you dare to go near his two girlfriends! (can you spot the interloper in the background?)

This is the swinhoe pheasant, he is always displaying and shouting at his girlfriend, unfortunately we could not hatch any of their eggs this year as she kept laying them on top of the hide and every one would promptly fall off and break, we tried trays, moving the hide, taking it out, but all failed as she likes to lay in the air so they all fell down!

And of course, my little girl Willow. She always manages to sneak into the photos!
And the latest on Cyril the squirrel, he is to be released very shortly so I will take my camera with me when I place his cage in the woods for you all to see him for one last time, he really is a cutie!
