Amur Leopard by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper

This is my 'secret' project I have been working on, this is another leopard portrait which has already taken hours of work, it actually took two days just to draw outlines. It's quite a big piece, A2 in size and will keep me busy for sometime yet. I thought I'd go for broke and set myself a challenge, I've recently joined the UKCPS (United Kingdom Colour Pencils Society) and want to add a page of my own to their website so this hopefully will be one of the pieces, plus I have started to build a new website just for wildlife art but until I have more pieces it will look a bit poor!!!. I wasn't going to add this to my blog until it was completed but if I didn't it would mean I wouldn't be updating my blog as much as normal but by blogging it, it now means I will make the effort to get on with it otherwise I will look very unprofessional! Unless I have a deadline or a target I tend to leave things to sit around for weeks on end and that will not help me get my art 'out there'! Although the work I have completed so far with this portrait does look very small it is in fact quite an area and has taken many layers to achieve the depth of colour and I've worn down pencils already (good excuse to go art supplies shopping anyway). Luckily I am patient with portraits, I have patience for nothing else whatsoever except animals so I will plod along with this and hopefully add more updates as I go along. The reference image is from Marie Provencher, see her link to the right of this post. She has kindly allowed me to use another of her images, she manages to get such superb photographs, I am so jealous.
As it's Mother's Day today we are all off to the pub for lunch and a few beers no doubt, thought I'd better put my update on before I drink the bar dry otherwise it could end up just jumbled nonsense!

I enjoyed seeing the update on Patch and I LOVED that felled tree photo. You made it look like a huge outdoor sculpture. Seeing your new piece is like peeking under the wrapping at a Christmas present.

I love to watch how you start a portrait out! I'm sure this one will be as lovely as your other ones!

I've got back to it after refraining from too much beer at the pub! I had a sweet instead so I could see quite clearly! I've now got an ear and forehead to my leopard!
