Leopard by Wildlife Artist Karie-Ann Cooper

It just shows it's worth persevering, I really don't remember liking drafting film before, in fact I think I found it annoying, not this time after having adapted my technique it seems like a dream to work on! Instead of putting down a solid layer of base colour, I am putting down a layer of fur in the lightest shade, I then simply go back with ever darkening colours and fill in the gaps giving the illusion of ur, and it seems to work, as usual Willow woke me up at 5.30am and since then I have been sat watching the Chinese Grand Prix and working on the leopard. Again it's quite a big piece, this one will be A3 when completed. And I've also completed Patch, I've just sent the portrait for approval and will update that asap.

It looks lovely so far! I am seriously contemplating film as well...may need to change out my pencils though, since I use strictly Prisma Color wax based. Cant wait to see more.

yes it is amazing you work this way. In mentioning you using drafting paper, do you mean Vellum? I remember the FBI telling us we should consider using that paper for our composites.

The Chinese have a Grand Prix?! Learn something new every day...

Hi Sheila, Drafting film is also known as dura-lar-matte and it's almost like an acetate sheet but only semi-translucent. Before today I would have said it's more trouble than it's worth but now I think I love it!!! And yes the Chinese have a Grand Prix held over there, the Red Bull team won by the way!

Thankyou for becoming my first blog follower and enjoying my art. I am now a follower of your blog and I love your wildlife art. As an ex-drftsman I am very interested in your work on drafting film. It looks graet! What sort of coloured pencils do you use and how long does it take you to complete a peice? I am predominately a pastel artist and I am finding graphite very slow in comparison which is not what I expected. I am sure coloured pencil must be just as time consuming!!

Looking great Kari...got to be honest I have tried drafting film before with out much success, but seeing this gives me a bit more inspiration to have another go. Wendy Prior is an artist using CPs and work almost exclusively on film, her work is breathtaking.

All of your wonderful comments have made me keen to get on with this, I'm so happy with how the drafting film is working out, I'm surprised I didn't get on with it on my previous attempt now, how could I be so wrong about a support? I'm off to check out Wnedy Prior on your recommendation Vic, I'd love to see how others are getting on with film and perhaps my board and paper will go on the back burner for a while!
